Intro to Winter Hiking & Snowshoeing
If you’re new to winter hiking, this post is for you. I think there’s some anxiety around hiking or snowshoeing in the winter — the concern of getting cold. But if you prepare well, it can be such a rewarding and peaceful experience. So beautiful to walk softly through the snow covered forest, up to higher ground, looking down on a winter wonderland.
Dining on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve
If you’re in Lake Placid over Christmas or New Years, and plan to dine out, you better make those reservations soon! Many restaurants are closed on Christmas Day, and the ones that are open book up fast.
Apres Ski
After a day on the mountain, everybody loves a good apres ski meet up. My personal criteria hits the following: 1) casual, come-as-you-are vibe; 2) menu with some hearty options and/or solid appetizers; 3) great beer. Fun atmosphere and music are bonus points. So based on that, here’s my list of favorite Lake Placid spots around the Whiteface (downhill) and Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Cascade (XC) areas.

Even in the winter, the mountains are calling. You probably know that Lake Placid hosted past Olympics, but may not realize the vast variety of snow activities you can enjoy in this unique area. Check out these 15 suggestions for fun winter activities in the ADK.
Top 5 Wintertime Cocktails
Lake Placid is a beer town. Hands down. But when it’s cold and snowy outside, sometimes you need a hot toddy to revive you at the end of the day. Why not try one of these supreme winter cocktails at our favorite bars.
Seasons Greetings
November is here and our cottage is booking up for the holidays! November and December are a wonderful time to visit Lake Placid. Fewer crowds, easy to get a table at your favorite restaurant, holiday shopping deals and plenty of activities.
Cottage Rental Schedule
We spend about four months a year in Lake Placid at our cottage. It’s a dream. To make that possible, we rent the house on Airbnb when we aren’t there. Win - win! If you’re planning a trip to the Adirondacks, we’d love to host you.
Give Thanks
It’s easy to appreciate God’s work … or any higher being … when you’re on an Adirondack Mountaintop, beside a stunning lake, or walking in the peaceful woods. The natural beauty of our surroundings is life affirming. While not many attend religious services while on vacation, our places of worship in Lake Placid are beautiful. Definitely a feel-good experience. And, especially if it’s a rainy or frigid day outside, why not seek some warmth with an indoor activity like going to worship. (Also great on gorgeous sunny days!)
Adirondack Rustic
If shopping and antiquing is your grove, and you like Adirondack Rustic, you can definitely find it around Lake Placid.
Hiking with Dogs
Our dog Maddie is quite the hiking dog. So far she’s completed the Saranac 6er and Lake Placid 9er with us, and we’re part way through the ADK-9er and Fire Tower Challenge. It can be lots of fun hiking with your dog, just remember to properly prep with the right gear and enough water for a great day in the mountains. And consider your dog’s age, health, stamina and abilities when choosing your hike. Here’s our packing and prep list for taking Maddie on the trail with us.
2023 Winter World University Games
The 2023 University Games are coming to Lake Placid, January 12 - 22. The Winter World University Games, held every two years, is the largest multi-sport winter event in the world, after the Winter Olympics of course! The games combine high-level competitive sport with educational and cultural events. University students between the ages of 17 and 25 are eligible to compete, many Olympic hopefuls. If you’re planning a trip to Lake Placid in mid-January, here’s what you need to know about the Games.
